Fall is the beginning of the decorating season. I love this season and years ago was a fall decoration addict you could say, so I would like to share some tips as an intervention for you if you have the same problem I did.

  1. The most important thing to do is not purchase anything until you go through what you have at home already. I know this is hard as you see all of those cute pumpkins at Hobby Lobby in July and you are afraid they will be gone by the time you put your fall decorations up so you just need to buy a few (or more). You must resist the urge.

  1. Once you have your decorations out look through them and determine if there are some you never use anymore. Make a donation pile. Our tastes change over the years and so we do not want to continue to buy and store and never use. If there is an item that you are not going to use this year, but you really can’t let go, place a post-it note on that bin stating the item. If the season comes around again and you still are not using it, it should go.

  1. You do not need to decorate the entire house. This was a mistake I made when I had my first house. Decorations should first make you happy, but most of us do it to have our house look nice for family and friends. Look at those spaces where guests would spend their time and focus your decorations there. Again not every spot in your house must have a decoration for it to look nice. If you must place something in the guest bathroom, make it something small.

  1. Try not to attend a craft show until you have looked through the decorations you already have at your house. If you must purchase something at a show, think of where it will go in your house right now. If you cannot come up with a place for it you probably don’t need it.

We want you to enjoy each holiday season and the items you have set out at your home. It should not be a stressful time to decorate for the seasons. If it is then maybe you should only set out a couple of items that bring you joy and forget the rest. Make your memories with the people in your life not with the stuff.
